Coinbase Dogecoin review: licensed, liquid, not cheap

Coinbase sells DOGE in dollars, euros and pounds, holds a New York BitLicense and an EU MiCA licence, and sends DOGE on its native network. The price of that polish is a simple-buy fee you only see at checkout.

CEX.IO’s US service does not cover every state (New York is restricted). Check your state before signing up; US alternatives are covered on this page.

Quick verdict

Coinbase Dogecoin trading has two faces. The simple buy screen is the friendliest in the business and works for a first purchase in minutes, but it charges a spread plus a fee that you only see on the confirmation screen. Coinbase Advanced, the order-book mode, is cheaper per trade and lets you buy DOGE from $1. Behind both sits the most heavily licensed brand in this comparison: a New York BitLicense since 2017, an EU MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg’s CSSF, and the disclosure duties of a Nasdaq-listed company.

We score Coinbase 8.0 out of 10. It earns top marks for regulation and DOGE access, and loses points for expensive simple-buy pricing and the insider data breach it disclosed in May 2025. If you want to see it next to other venues, the exchange reviews hub has the full table.

Who Coinbase is

Coinbase, Inc. is the operating company of Coinbase Global, Inc., founded in 2012 and listed on Nasdaq under the ticker COIN. Its 2021 S-1 registration statement on SEC EDGAR is still the best primary document on how the business is structured, and as a listed company it files quarterly and annual reports and material-event disclosures with the SEC. That paper trail is a real advantage when you’re deciding whom to trust with your coins.

For DOGE buyers the key fact is coverage. On 14 October 2026 Coinbase’s public exchange API showed three fiat Dogecoin markets online: DOGE-USD, DOGE-EUR and DOGE-GBP. There was no DOGE-USDC product. On the day we checked, CoinGecko tracked about $7.1 million of 24-hour volume on Coinbase’s DOGE/USD book, so liquidity is rarely a concern for retail order sizes.

What we could not confirm is state-by-state availability, including New York. Coinbase’s help centre blocked automated checks on 14 October 2026, so if you live in a state with tight crypto rules, look for DOGE in the app before funding your account.

Licences and registers

Coinbase’s regulatory footprint is broad. Its S-1 says it holds money-transmitter licences in the states that require them, plus DC and Puerto Rico. New York granted it a BitLicense in January 2017, and in the EU Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. was authorised as a MiCA crypto-asset service provider by the CSSF on 20 June 2025, which lets it passport its services across the EEA.

Coinbase publishes its state licence numbers on its legal licences page. That page and NMLS Consumer Access both refused our requests on 14 October 2026, so we don’t quote an NMLS number here; you can search NMLS by company name in a minute. For how US rules apply to DOGE more generally, including tax reporting on Form 1099-DA, see our Dogecoin in the US guide.

How to buy Dogecoin on Coinbase

Can I buy Dogecoin on Coinbase with a few taps? Yes, and the steps are the same on mobile and web. The only real choice is between the simple buy button and Advanced.

  1. Create and verify your account

Sign up and complete identity verification; have an ID document ready.

  2. Add a payment method

US users typically link a bank account (ACH) or a debit card; available methods and their costs depend on your country and are shown in the app. Our guide to buying DOGE with a card explains why cards usually cost more.

  3. Search for Dogecoin

Open the DOGE page. You’ll see the chart, the current price and a Buy button.

  4. Choose simple buy or Advanced

Simple buy is quick but shows a spread plus fee at checkout. On Advanced, place a limit or market order on DOGE-USD from $1.

  5. Review, confirm and secure

Check the total, confirm, then decide whether to leave DOGE on Coinbase or send it to your own Dogecoin wallet.

Coinbase also offers recurring purchases, which can help if you prefer to buy a fixed amount every week or month. We didn’t verify the DOGE-specific settings, so check the options in the app. Our general guide to buying Dogecoin covers the same process across all platforms, including network choices.

Coinbase Dogecoin fees: simple vs Advanced

Coinbase does not publish a fixed fee table for simple buys. The total you pay includes a spread, meaning a mark-up on the market price, plus a separate Coinbase fee, and both appear on the preview screen. That’s transparent at the moment of purchase but makes it hard to compare in advance. Our advice: open the preview, note the total, then cancel and compare with an Advanced order of the same size.

On Coinbase Advanced, fees are percentage-based and fall with volume. According to a September 2026 press report, the US entry tier changed on 16 September 2026 to 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker, with EU and UK users paying 0.25% and 0.50%. We could not confirm these figures on coinbase.com, so treat them as indicative and check the fee page in your account.

A worked example: a $200 market order on Advanced at a 0.90% taker rate costs $1.80 in fees, before any slippage. That’s pricier than Robinhood’s commission-free default on paper, though Robinhood’s spread is invisible and can be wider. Such fee, much maths. The Dogecoin calculator helps you see how fees affect a position over time.

Coinbase Dogecoin withdrawal and deposits

Coinbase sends DOGE on the native Dogecoin network by default. Its public currency data on 14 October 2026 showed a minimum withdrawal of 1 DOGE and 50 confirmations for incoming deposits, which at Dogecoin’s roughly one-minute block time means about 50 minutes before a deposit is credited. The network fee is calculated at the moment you send and shown before you confirm; we could not find a fixed published figure.

Selling works like buying in reverse: sell DOGE for USD, EUR or GBP, then withdraw cash to your bank. If you’re cashing out from a self-custody wallet, send DOGE to your Coinbase deposit address on the Dogecoin network, wait for the confirmations and then sell. Our Dogecoin selling guide covers the tax and timing side.

Security record

Coinbase has never disclosed a theft of customer crypto from its own wallets in the sources we checked, but in May 2025 it reported a serious insider breach. Overseas support agents had been bribed to copy data on fewer than 1% of monthly transacting users, including names, addresses, masked Social Security numbers, masked bank data and ID images. Coinbase refused a $20 million extortion demand, and its 15 May 2025 Form 8-K estimated the cost at $180 million to $400 million. No passwords, private keys or funds were accessed.

  1. Coinbase founded

Coinbase Global, Inc. is later listed on Nasdaq as COIN.

  2. New York BitLicense

    NYDFS grants Coinbase a BitLicense.

  3. Insider data breach disclosed

Bribed support agents leaked customer data; Form 8-K estimates $180M–$400M in costs.

  4. MiCA authorisation

Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. authorised by the CSSF.

  5. Advanced fee change

New entry tiers reported for US, EU and UK users.

The lesson from 2025 is practical: leaked personal data fuels phishing. Expect fake “Coinbase support” calls and emails, never move coins to a “safe wallet” someone gives you, and use an authenticator app or security key. Our guide to Dogecoin scams walks through the common scripts.

App experience

The Coinbase app holds 4.7 out of 5 from about 1.8 million ratings on the US App Store (checked 13 October 2026). It’s clean and beginner-friendly, with the main friction being the gap between the simple and Advanced views. Beginners tend to stay on the simple screen and pay more than they need to.

Pros, cons and our score

👍 What we like

  • US-listed company with SEC filings
  • NYDFS BitLicense and EU MiCA licence
  • DOGE in USD, EUR and GBP with low minimums
  • Deep DOGE/USD liquidity
  • Native Dogecoin withdrawals

👀 What to watch

  • Simple-buy spread plus fee is costly
  • Advanced US taker fee of 0.90% (press report)
  • May 2025 insider data breach
  • Two DOGE networks invite user error
  • State-level DOGE availability not confirmed

Using our weighting (regulation 30%, DOGE access and liquidity 20%, fees and transparency 20%, security 20%, DOGE features 10%), Coinbase scores near the top on regulation and access. Fees pull it down, because the cheapest route is hidden behind the Advanced toggle and the simple-buy cost isn’t published. The 2025 breach costs points on security even though no funds were lost. That gives 8.0 out of 10, half a point above Robinhood.

Our take

Coinbase is the safe default for many DOGE buyers in the US and Europe. Use Advanced instead of the one-tap buy, choose the Dogecoin network when you withdraw, and treat any unsolicited “support” contact as a scam.

Alternatives and who Coinbase suits

In the US, the closest rival is Robinhood: commission-free by default and available for DOGE in every state, though less transparent on cost. Read our Robinhood Dogecoin review for the side-by-side. Kraken, Gemini and Binance.US also listed DOGE/USD on 14 October 2026. CEX.IO, a global exchange running since 2013, lists DOGE for US customers in the states its licences cover, with New York restricted and thin DOGE order books. If you prefer not to hold coins directly, a spot Dogecoin ETF is covered in our ETF guide.

In Europe, Coinbase competes with cheaper local order books. The Bitvavo review shows a 0.25% taker fee and a published 3.9 DOGE withdrawal fee, and the Bitpanda review covers a broker with DOGE prices in twelve currencies.

Coinbase suits buyers who put regulation first, want DOGE in dollars, euros or pounds, and are willing to switch to Advanced for lower fees. It suits less cost-sensitive users who only ever tap “Buy”, or anyone who doesn’t want to choose between networks when withdrawing.

On any exchange, an order-book trade usually costs less than a one-tap buy. Compare both, then move long-term DOGE to a wallet you hold the keys to.
