Buy Dogecoin in Australia: PayID, AUD and the ATO

Australia is one of the easiest places to buy DOGE in local dollars: at least five local exchanges quote DOGE/AUD and PayID deposits land in minutes. Here is who regulates them, what it costs and how the ATO taxes your gains.

Our buttons open CEX.IO, an exchange running since 2013. In the US it is registered with NMLS (#1804170) and lists money-transmitter licences in 38 states plus DC; in the UK it is registered with the FCA for anti-money-laundering purposes (firm 1007192). Check that it serves your country first.

Quick answer

To buy Dogecoin in Australia, sign up with an exchange registered with AUSTRAC, verify your ID, deposit Australian dollars by PayID or bank transfer, and buy DOGE on the DOGE/AUD market. On 14 October 2026 we confirmed DOGE/AUD prices on CoinSpot, Swyftx, Independent Reserve, CoinJar and BTC Markets through their own public APIs, plus Kraken’s XDG/AUD. That is plenty of local choice.

Prices sat in a tight band that morning, roughly A$0.117 to A$0.120 per DOGE, so the real difference between exchanges is fees and spreads rather than the headline price. The hero widget shows the live rate and what A$50, A$100 or A$500 buys. If you are new to all this, our general guide on how to buy Dogecoin walks through wallets and orders from scratch.

AUSTRAC, ASIC and the new rules

Australia is midway through a big regulatory upgrade, and 2026 is the year it moved. For years, crypto exchanges only had to register with AUSTRAC, the anti-money-laundering regulator, as “digital currency exchange” providers. On 31 March 2026 AML/CTF reforms turned them into virtual asset service providers (VASPs). Existing registrants were moved across automatically; newly covered services had until 29 July 2026 to apply. AUSTRAC registration is about money laundering checks, not a guarantee that the business is solvent.

The second layer is coming from ASIC. The Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025 passed Parliament on 1 April 2026 and received Royal Assent on 8 April 2026. It pulls “digital asset platforms” and “tokenised custody platforms” into the Australian financial services licence (AFSL) system, with an exemption for small platforms handling up to A$10 million a year. According to law-firm analysis, it commences about 12 months after assent, reportedly 9 April 2027, followed by a six-month window to apply for a licence. We could not confirm the exact commencement date on the federal register, so treat those dates as reported.

  1. ATM cash cap

AUSTRAC sets a A$5,000 limit on cash in and out of crypto ATMs, plus scam warnings.

  2. Exchanges become VASPs

AML/CTF reforms start; existing exchange registrations roll over automatically.

  3. Digital assets law assented

Platforms will need an AFSL from ASIC once the law commences.

  4. VASP application deadline

Newly covered services had to apply to AUSTRAC by this date.

  5. AFSL regime starts

Then a six-month window to apply, per law-firm reports.

Exchanges with DOGE/AUD

We pulled DOGE prices directly from each exchange’s public API on 14 October 2026. Registration details come from the exchanges’ own websites, because we did not query AUSTRAC’s register directly; where we could not confirm a registration, the table says so.

CoinSpot is the name most Australians know. It has been around since 2013, lets you start from “as little as $1”, and its fee page shows the trade-off clearly: 1% for instant buy, sell and swap (and for recurring buys), but 0.1% for market orders. AUD deposits by PayID, direct deposit, card and PayPal are free; cash deposits cost 2.5%. In November 2023 a CoinSpot hot wallet lost about $2.4 million in ETH in what CertiK called a likely key compromise. Our CoinSpot review weighs all of that.

Swyftx showed a 2.14% buy/sell spread on DOGE at the moment we checked, which is a good reminder that “no fee” screens are paid for somewhere. Independent Reserve prints its AUSTRAC number in the footer (DCE-100461150-001) and accepts PayID, bank transfer, PayPal and cards. CoinJar says it is registered with AUSTRAC as a VASP, has served customers since 2013 and takes free AUD deposits via PayID, Osko, bank transfer or PayPal. BTC Markets had about A$17,700 of DOGE-AUD volume that day.

How to buy Dogecoin in Australia, step by step

  1. Pick an AUSTRAC-registered exchange

Look for the registration statement in the footer or on the AML page, and compare instant-buy fees with order-book fees.

  2. Verify your identity

Expect a driver licence or passport check. Exchanges also share data with the ATO under its crypto data-matching program.

  3. Deposit AUD by PayID

PayID and Osko are near-instant and free on several exchanges. Card deposits work too; our guide to buying Dogecoin with a card covers the costs.

  4. Buy on the DOGE/AUD market

Use the order book or a market order rather than the instant-buy button if you want the lower fee. Check the spread before you confirm.

  5. Store it sensibly

Leave a small amount on the exchange or move it to your own Dogecoin wallet on the native Dogecoin network.

How to sell Dogecoin for AUD

Selling runs the same route backwards: sell DOGE on the DOGE/AUD market, then withdraw AUD to your bank. On CoinSpot, bank withdrawals are free and PayPal withdrawals cost 2%. If your DOGE sits in a private wallet, send it to the exchange’s DOGE deposit address on the Dogecoin network first. Remember that the sale is a CGT event, so note the date and the AUD value. Our guide to selling Dogecoin has the full checklist, and the Dogecoin calculator converts any amount to AUD.

Dogecoin tax in Australia

The ATO treats disposing of crypto as a capital gains tax event. That covers more than selling for dollars: swapping DOGE for another coin, gifting it and spending it all count. Your capital gain is added to your assessable income and taxed at your marginal rate. Losses can offset capital gains.

The big lever is time. Australian-resident individuals who held an asset for at least 12 months can apply the 50% CGT discount. A quick example with round numbers: you buy 10,000 DOGE for A$1,000 and sell them for A$1,600. Sold after eight months, the full A$600 gain is added to your income. Sold after fourteen months, only A$300 is. Same coins, half the taxable gain.

The Australian financial year ends on 30 June, and people who lodge their own return must do it by 31 October, which, as we write this in mid-October, is only a couple of weeks away. Do not assume the ATO will not notice: its crypto data-matching program collects exchange records covering 2023-24 to 2025-26. This is general information, not tax advice.

CEX.IO for Australians

CEX.IO is a long-running global exchange that has operated since 2013. Australia is not on its list of unsupported countries, so Australians can sign up; they contract with CEX OVRS LLC, a company registered in Nevis (St Kitts and Nevis), whose terms state no financial-regulator licence. We found no AUSTRAC registration for CEX.IO, although we did not query the register directly.

The practical points: there is no AUD pair for DOGE, so you trade against USD, EUR, USDC, USDT or BTC, and pay currency conversion on top. DOGE liquidity there is thin compared with the local AUD books above. Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay funding is available, with card fees CEX.IO itself quotes at 0.49% to 4.99% plus a service charge. For most Australians a local DOGE/AUD exchange funded by free PayID will be cheaper; CEX.IO is an option if you already use it globally.

Crypto ATMs and scams

Australia has a large crypto ATM network, with estimates ranging from about 1,600 to over 1,800 machines depending on the source. We found no source confirming that Australian ATMs sell DOGE; AUSTRAC’s material names Bitcoin, Tether and Ether. AUSTRAC’s own figures, as reported in June 2025, put ATM use at about 150,000 transactions and A$275 million a year, with people aged 50 and over making up about 72% of the value. That skew is why the A$5,000 cash cap and scam warnings were introduced.

The pattern to watch for is a stranger, a “bank officer” or a romance contact telling you to feed cash into a machine. Fake celebrity giveaways using Elon Musk’s face are the DOGE-flavoured version. Our Dogecoin scams guide shows the common scripts and how to report them.

Our take

Australia gets DOGE right on access: several AUSTRAC-registered exchanges, real AUD order books and free PayID deposits. The main costs are instant-buy fees and spreads, which order-book trading avoids. Mark 31 October in the calendar and enjoy the 50% discount if you hold a year. Questions people ask

Is Dogecoin legal in Australia?+

Yes. Buying, holding and selling DOGE is legal. Exchanges must be registered with AUSTRAC, and since 31 March 2026 they are registered as virtual asset service providers. A separate ASIC licensing regime for digital asset platforms passed in 2026 and is reported to start around April 2027.

What is the cheapest way to buy Dogecoin in Australia?+

Order-book trades are usually cheaper than instant buys. CoinSpot, for example, charges 0.1% on market orders but 1% on instant buys, according to its fee page checked on 14 October 2026. Funding by PayID is free on several exchanges.

How is Dogecoin taxed in Australia?+

Selling, swapping, gifting or spending DOGE is a capital gains tax event. The gain is added to your income and taxed at your marginal rate. If you are an Australian resident and held the DOGE for at least 12 months, you can usually halve the gain with the 50% CGT discount.

When is the tax return due for crypto in Australia?+

The financial year ends on 30 June. If you lodge your own return, it is due by 31 October. Tax agents can usually lodge later under their own program.

Can I buy Dogecoin at a crypto ATM in Australia?+

Australia has a large crypto ATM network, but we found no source confirming DOGE at Australian machines. AUSTRAC capped cash deposits and withdrawals at A$5,000 per transaction in 2025 because of scams, so treat ATMs with caution.

Is CEX.IO available in Australia?+

Australia is not on CEX.IO’s unsupported list, and Australians sign up with its Nevis-based entity, CEX OVRS LLC. There is no AUD pair for DOGE and we found no AUSTRAC registration for CEX.IO, so local exchanges with DOGE/AUD are usually simpler.
