Quick answer: how to buy Dogecoin in Austria
Austria is a small market with an outsized crypto industry. Bitpanda, one of Europe’s biggest retail crypto brokers, is headquartered in Vienna and authorised by the Finanzmarktaufsicht (FMA). If you want to buy Dogecoin in Austria, the usual route is an FMA- or MiCA-authorised app, a free EPS or SEPA deposit, and a market or limit order on DOGE/EUR.
What sets Austria apart is tax. Crypto gains are taxed at a flat 27.5%, and domestic providers have withheld that tax automatically since 2024. For many holders, that means no separate crypto calculation at filing time, as long as they stay with an Austrian provider. Foreign platforms passported into Austria are legal too, but you then report the gains yourself. The generic process, without the local details, is in our how to buy Dogecoin guide.
For scale: on 14 October 2026 Bitpanda’s public ticker quoted DOGE at about €0.0731. That is a dated snapshot; the euro widget above is live.
Is crypto legal in Austria? FMA and MiCA
Dogecoin is legal to own and trade in Austria. The FMA is the national competent authority under MiCA, the EU’s crypto regulation, which has applied since 30 December 2024. Austria gave existing firms a 12-month transition, per ESMA’s list, which ended around 30 December 2025. Since then, a platform serving Austrian retail clients must be in ESMA’s register, either authorised in Austria or passported from another EU state.
ESMA’s register (file dated 7 October 2026) lists 11 providers with Austria as their home state. Besides Bitpanda GmbH (9 April 2025) and Bybit EU GmbH (28 May 2025), they include Coinfinity, DADAT Krypto, FIOR Digital (21bitcoin), KuCoin EU Exchange, Cryptonow, AMINA (Austria), Validvent, WB-Shields Innovations (WhiteBIT EU, 18 June 2026) and OSL EU GmbH (7 July 2026). Several are international brands that use an Austrian company as their EU licence holder.
Where to buy DOGE in Austria: dogecoin kaufen Österreich
Not every Austrian-licensed firm lists Dogecoin, and not every DOGE venue is Austrian. The table below sticks to platforms where we saw a live DOGE/EUR market on 14 October 2026 and a matching ESMA entry.
| Platform | Home and licence | DOGE market | Euro funding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitpanda | Vienna (FMA, 9 Apr 2025) | DOGE/EUR, broker price | SEPA, PayPal, EPS (per app listing) |
| Bitvavo | Amsterdam (AFM), passported | DOGE-EUR order book | EPS and SEPA free |
| Kraken | Dublin (CBI), passported | XDG/EUR | SEPA |
| Bybit EU | Vienna (FMA, 28 May 2025) | DOGE/EUR, thin volume | Check in app |
Bitpanda is the local default. It works as a broker, so you buy at a quoted price that includes a premium of 0.00% to 2.49% per its support pages, and its domestic status matters for tax withholding. Our Bitpanda review covers costs, the app and its three MiCA authorisations. Bitvavo is the order-book alternative: Dutch, passported into Austria, with free EPS deposits and a published DOGE withdrawal fee of 3.9 DOGE. See the Bitvavo review for the fee table.
Two caveats. WhiteBIT shows a liquid DOGE/EUR market on CoinGecko, but whether that market runs through its Austrian EU entity could not be verified. And Trade Republic Austria said in a 2022 interview that it had chosen not to list Dogecoin; that quote is old and the current status is unverified, so check in the app.

Paying with EPS, SEPA or PayPal
EPS (eps-Überweisung) is Austria’s own online banking payment. You pick your bank, log in to online banking and approve the transfer, and the platform sees the payment straight away. Bitvavo has a support article for EPS deposits from Austrian bank accounts and lists EPS among its free deposit methods. Bitpanda’s app-store listing names EPS for deposits only.
SEPA and SEPA Instant are the universal fallback and are free on most platforms. PayPal works on Bitpanda in Austria for EUR and CHF, per its support pages; Bitpanda charges 1.49% for PayPal deposits on its Fusion platform. Cards are fastest to set up but usually the most expensive; our page on buying DOGE with a card breaks down those costs.

Buy DOGEThe buying flow in practice
On an Austrian broker app the whole purchase takes a few minutes once your account is verified. You confirm your identity with a passport or ID card, choose EPS or SEPA, approve the payment in your online banking, and the euros usually arrive straight away with EPS. Then you open the Dogecoin page, enter an amount in euros and confirm the quoted price. On an order-book exchange such as Bitvavo or Kraken you get one extra decision: a market order fills immediately at the best available price, while a limit order waits until DOGE reaches the price you set. Bitvavo’s minimum order is €5, so a test purchase costs very little.
Before the first purchase, decide where the coins will live. Leaving DOGE on a domestic platform keeps the KESt withholding simple. Moving it to your own wallet gives you control of the keys, but when you later sell through a different provider you may have to document the purchase price yourself. Either choice is legitimate; just make it on purpose.
Dogecoin Steuer Österreich: 27.5% KESt explained
Austria rewrote its crypto tax rules in 2022. According to the Finance Ministry’s guidance (last updated 1 January 2026), income from crypto, including realised gains, is taxed at a special rate of 27.5% under section 27a(1) EStG. The new regime applies from 1 March 2022.
- Tax rate on DOGE gains
- 27.5% special rate
- Regime applies since
- 1 March 2022
- Old holdings (Altbestände)
- Acquired up to 28 Feb 2021; tax-free after one year
- Crypto-to-crypto swaps
- Tax-neutral; cost basis carries over
- Withholding by domestic providers
- On income after 31 Dec 2023
The rules that matter most for a Dogecoin holder are these. Selling DOGE for euros is taxable at 27.5%, regardless of how long you held it, unless the coins are Altbestände bought on or before 28 February 2021, which stay under the old rules and are tax-free after one year. Swapping DOGE for another coin is tax-neutral: the cost basis simply moves to the new coin, and tax arises when you cash out to euros.
Withholding is the practical bonus. Domestic providers deduct KESt on crypto income arising after 31 December 2023, and that withholding settles the tax. With a foreign platform you calculate and declare the gains yourself. Staking that only validates transactions is not taxed when the coins arrive, but those coins get a cost basis of zero; DOGE has no native staking, so this mainly matters for other coins.
Bitcoinmat in MediaMarkt: Austria’s crypto ATMs
Austria has an unusually visible crypto ATM network. According to Kurant, Austrian Bitcoin ATMs were back in operation from 18 May 2026, now run by FINTECH SK s.r.o. under the Bitcoinmat.org brand. The machines sit in all 56 MediaMarkt stores in Austria and at ARBÖ sites, so you can, in theory, buy crypto next to the TVs.
Whether these machines sell DOGE could not be confirmed: the operator’s page speaks of “Bitcoin & Co.” without listing coins. If you try one, check the coin list, the fee and the exchange rate on screen before you insert cash, and send to a native DOGE address in your own Dogecoin wallet. ATM fees are usually much higher than app fees.
CEX.IO in Austria
CEX.IO has run an exchange since 2013, but it is closed to new Austrian users for now. Its EU terms, last updated 1 July 2026, say it does not onboard new EU or EEA users; existing accounts are withdrawal-only. The company says its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review, and it was not in ESMA’s register on 14 October 2026. Existing customers can still withdraw their euros and DOGE. New buyers should use an authorised platform above, and our exchange reviews compare the options side by side.
Before you buy: a short Austrian checklist
Most problems we see come from skipping one of these steps, not from the coin itself. Run through them before you fund anything.
- The platform’s legal entity is in ESMA’s MiCA register, with Austria covered.
- DOGE/EUR is actually listed for Austrian users (check the app, not a blog post).
- You know whether the provider is domestic and withholds KESt, or whether you must declare gains yourself.
- You fund with EPS or SEPA where possible, not a card.
- Withdrawals go over the native Dogecoin network to an address starting with D.
- You ignore “guaranteed return” DOGE schemes; see our scams guide.
The last point is not a joke. Fake trading bots and giveaway scams target Austrian users as much as anyone; our guide to Dogecoin scams lists the common ones. When you cash out, the selling guide covers the steps back to euros.
Comparing neighbours? Germany offers tax-free sales after one year instead of a flat rate, as our Dogecoin in Germany guide explains, and Finland’s DOGE page shows a very different capital-income system. All 17 markets are on the countries overview.
Questions people ask
How is Dogecoin taxed in Austria?+
Realised gains on DOGE are taxed at a special rate of 27.5% under section 27a EStG. The regime has applied since 1 March 2022. Domestic providers withhold the tax (KESt) on income arising after 31 December 2023, which settles it for you.
Is swapping DOGE for another coin taxable in Austria?+
No. According to the Finance Ministry, crypto-to-crypto swaps are tax-neutral and your cost basis carries over to the new coin. Tax arises when you sell DOGE for euros.
What are Altbestände?+
Old holdings: crypto acquired up to 28 February 2021. These stay under the old rules and can be sold tax-free after a holding period of one year.
Can I pay with EPS to buy Dogecoin?+
Yes, on some platforms. Bitvavo documents EPS deposits for users with an Austrian bank account, and EPS deposits are free there. Bitpanda’s app listing also names EPS for deposits.
Do Bitcoin ATMs in Austria sell Dogecoin?+
We could not confirm it. Bitcoinmat machines are back in all 56 MediaMarkt stores in Austria since 18 May 2026, but the operator’s page talks about Bitcoin and other coins without listing DOGE.
Can I open a CEX.IO account in Austria?+
Not at the moment. CEX.IO does not onboard new EU or EEA users while its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review, and existing accounts are withdrawal-only.
