Dogecoin history in brief
The short version of Dogecoin history: a meme about a Japanese Shiba Inu became a cryptocurrency on 6 December 2013, built a famously generous community in 2014, spent five years as a fraction-of-a-cent curiosity, then exploded in 2021 to an all-time high of about $0.73. Since then it has lived through Tesla merch, a Twitter logo swap, the death of the dog that started it all, a US government department borrowing its name and, from 2025, its own exchange-traded funds.
On 14 October 2026 CoinGecko listed DOGE at about $0.0815, rank #12, with a market cap of roughly $12.7 billion. That is around 89% below the 2021 peak but hundreds of times above the 2015 low. This page tells the story in order; the live Dogecoin price page covers what is happening today.
Who created Dogecoin, and why
Dogecoin’s founders are Billy Markus, an IBM software engineer in Portland, Oregon, and Jackson Palmer, who worked in marketing at Adobe in Sydney. In late 2013 the crypto world was full of copycat coins and breathless speculation, and the pair wanted a currency that laughed at all of it. Markus took the code of Luckycoin, itself derived from Litecoin, swapped in the new name and branding, and the network went live on 6 December 2013.
The branding came from the “Doge” meme. In 2010 Atsuko Sato, who had adopted her Shiba Inu Kabosu in 2008, posted a photo of the dog glancing sideways from a sofa. By 2013 that image, captioned in multicoloured Comic Sans with phrases like “such wow” and “very coin”, was everywhere online. Kabosu’s face became the Dogecoin logo and the tone of the whole project: friendly, self-mocking and a little absurd. The plain-English explainer on what Dogecoin is covers how the coin itself works.
The first weeks were not all fun. On Christmas Day 2013 the online wallet service Dogewallet was hacked and millions of DOGE were stolen; the community responded with a “SaveDogemas” campaign to reimburse victims. That reflex, rallying around a problem with donations, set the pattern for the next year.

The tipping era: Dogecoin in 2014
2014 is when Dogecoin earned its reputation. DOGE was so cheap that people tipped each other hundreds of coins on Reddit for a good joke, and the community started funding causes that mainstream crypto ignored. On 19–20 January 2014, fans raised about $36,000 in two days toward a $50,000 goal to send the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi Winter Olympics, as the Los Angeles Times reported. In March, the Doge4Water campaign with Charity: Water raised more than $30,000 for wells in Kenya’s Tana River basin.
Then came NASCAR. On 25 March 2014 the community collected Ð67.8 million, about $55,000, to sponsor driver Josh Wise. His Doge-wrapped car raced the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega in May, and on 16 May fans voted Wise into the Sprint All-Star Race. Much car, very speed.
Two technical decisions in 2014 shaped the coin permanently. In February, Palmer announced that the originally planned cap of 100 billion DOGE would not be coded, so issuance would continue at about 5 billion coins a year forever (Ars Technica). And on 11 September 2014, at block 371,337, Dogecoin activated merged mining with Litecoin, letting Scrypt miners secure both chains with the same work. The supply side of that story is on the Dogecoin supply page, and the mining side on the Dogecoin mining guide. By the end of the year both founders had stepped back from development.
The quiet years, 2015–2020
On 25 February 2015, at block 600,000, the block reward fixed itself at 10,000 DOGE, where it has stayed ever since. A few months later the price touched its all-time low: $0.0000869 on 5 May 2015 according to CoinGecko ($0.0000855 intraday on 7 May per CoinMarketCap). The 100-billionth coin was mined by mid-2015. Palmer left the crypto community the same year and in July 2021 publicly called crypto a scam that helps the rich get richer.
For the next few years Dogecoin was a sleepy fixture of the market. The 2017 altcoin boom pushed it above one cent for the first time (a high of $0.0107 on 25 December), and it peaked at $0.0188 on 7 January 2018 before sliding through the crypto winter. The most important event of this period looked small at the time: on 2 April 2019, Elon Musk replied to a joke poll with “Dogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency. It’s pretty cool.” On 20 December 2020 he followed up with “One Word: Doge”, and DOGE rose about 20%. The full story of that relationship is on our Elon Musk and Dogecoin page.
2021: the mania and Dogecoin’s all-time high
2021 is the year everyone remembers. On 28 January, in the middle of the GameStop and WallStreetBets short squeeze, retail traders piled into DOGE. CoinMarketCap’s daily closes went from $0.00748 to $0.0341, a 356% gain in one day, still the coin’s biggest. On 4 February Musk called it “the people’s crypto”. Robinhood later disclosed that DOGE had produced 34% of its crypto transaction revenue in the first quarter of 2021, and its crypto trading briefly went down on 15–16 April under “unprecedented demand”, the same day DOGE more than doubled.
The run peaked with Musk’s booking on Saturday Night Live. After his 28 April tweet “The Dogefather SNL May 8”, DOGE jumped from about $0.26 to over $0.31. The Dogecoin all-time high arrived at $0.731578 at 21:08 UTC on 7 May 2021 (CoinGecko); CoinMarketCap shows an intraday $0.7376 on 8 May. During the show itself the price fell as much as 29.5%, to about $0.49, a textbook “buy the rumour, sell the news” moment. A day later SpaceX agreed to launch the DOGE-1 lunar CubeSat paid in Dogecoin; its launch has been repeatedly delayed and could not be confirmed as of October 2026.
The year still had milestones left. Coinbase opened DOGE trading on 3 June 2021. In August the Dogecoin Foundation was revived, with Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Musk’s representative Jared Birchall announced as advisers. CNBC profiled Glauber Contessoto, nicknamed the “Dogecoin millionaire”, who refused to sell. DOGE closed 2021 up 3,542%, even after giving back most of the May peak. If you are curious what those swings would mean for a given amount, the Dogecoin calculator runs the numbers.
2022–2024: Tesla merch, a Twitter logo and goodbye to Kabosu
On 14 January 2022, a month after Musk floated the idea, Tesla made selected merchandise buyable with DOGE: the Cyberwhistle for about 300 DOGE, a belt buckle for 835 DOGE and the Cyberquad for Kids for 12,020 DOGE (no cars). That day was also DOGE’s 2022 high at $0.2032. The rest of the year belonged to the bear market, with a low of $0.0497 on 18 June. From the 2021 peak close to the June 2022 low close, DOGE lost about 92%. A $258 billion class action accusing Musk of running a Dogecoin “pyramid scheme” was also filed in June 2022.
On 3 April 2023, Twitter replaced its blue bird with the Doge image on desktop for a few days, and DOGE jumped more than 30% intraday. Around the same time a new on-chain trend arrived: Doginals inscriptions and DRC-20 tokens, which briefly pushed daily transactions to records in May 2023.
The saddest date in Dogecoin history is 24 May 2024, when Kabosu died aged about 18; Sato shared the news on Instagram and her blog, and tributes poured in from around the world. Three months later, on 29 August 2024, US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein dismissed the $258 billion lawsuit with prejudice, calling Musk’s statements “aspirational puffery”.

In mid-November 2024 President-elect Donald Trump named Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a “Department of Government Efficiency”, an acronym that deliberately echoed the coin, though the agency never had any official link to it. DOGE went from about $0.17 on election day to an intraday $0.436 on 12 November and a cycle high of $0.4835 on 8 December 2024. Musk left the role on 29 May 2025, and by November 2025 Reuters reported the department “doesn’t exist” as a central body.
The institutional era started on 18 September 2025, when REX-Osprey’s DOJE became the first US Dogecoin ETF, a 1940 Act fund that holds DOGE partly through a Cayman Islands subsidiary. A day earlier, on 17 September 2025, the SEC had approved generic listing standards that opened the door to spot trusts, and more funds followed: 21Shares’ 2x leveraged TXXD (20 November 2025), Grayscale’s GDOG (24 November 2025), Bitwise’s BWOW (26 November 2025) and 21Shares’ TDOG (22 January 2026). The funds stayed small, and Bitwise announced BWOW’s liquidation, with its last trading day on 14 October 2026. Details are on our Dogecoin ETF page.
Corporate Dogecoin grew up too. CleanCore Solutions launched an “Official Dogecoin Treasury” in September 2025, holding 710 million DOGE by 6 October 2025. And on 1 July 2026, House of Doge, the Dogecoin Foundation’s corporate arm, began trading on Nasdaq as HODO after merging with Brag House Holdings. Meanwhile, X Money rolled out across the US in July 2026 without any DOGE support, to the disappointment of many fans.

| 2026 (to 13 Oct) | $0.1173 | $0.0843 | −28.2% | $0.1561 |
Three things stand out. First, DOGE’s good years are enormous (+3,915% in 2017, +3,542% in 2021) and its bad years are brutal, with three drawdowns of 85% or more from cycle peaks. Second, almost every major move lines up with a wider crypto cycle or a Musk moment rather than with changes to the network itself. Third, the coin has never been “dead” for long: even after the 2018 and 2022 crashes it went on to new cycle highs. None of that predicts the future, which is why our Dogecoin price prediction page sticks to scenarios and attributed forecasts, and why the investment case deserves a sober read.

Questions people ask
Who created Dogecoin?+
Dogecoin was created by Billy Markus, an IBM software engineer in Portland, Oregon, and Jackson Palmer, a marketing staffer at Adobe in Sydney. They launched it in December 2013 as a joke about crypto speculation. Both left development in 2014, and a volunteer Dogecoin Core team took over.
When was Dogecoin created?+
Dogecoin launched on 6 December 2013. The genesis block in Dogecoin Core’s source code is timestamped 6 December 2013, 10:25:40 UTC. CoinGecko lists 8 December 2013 as the genesis date, but the official site and the code both give 6 December.
What is Dogecoin’s all-time high?+
According to CoinGecko, DOGE’s all-time high is $0.731578, reached at 21:08 UTC on 7 May 2021, the evening before Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live. CoinMarketCap’s data shows an intraday high of about $0.7376 on 8 May 2021 (UTC). The two figures differ because the sites aggregate different exchanges.
How much was Dogecoin in 2013?+
Fractions of a cent. CoinMarketCap’s data starts on 15 December 2013, when DOGE opened at about $0.000559. During the rest of December it ranged from $0.000116 to $0.00152 and closed the year at about $0.000422.

CoinGecko records an all-time low of $0.0000869 on 5 May 2015. CoinMarketCap’s intraday low is $0.0000855 on 7 May 2015. At that point a dollar bought more than 11,000 DOGE.
Who is the Dogecoin dog, Kabosu?+
Kabosu was a Shiba Inu owned by Atsuko Sato in Japan. Sato photographed her in 2010, and the photo became the Doge meme that gave Dogecoin its name and logo. Kabosu died on 24 May 2024, aged about 18.
Who is the Dogecoin millionaire?+
The nickname belongs to Glauber Contessoto, a real investor profiled by CNBC in May 2021 who said he would keep buying the dip rather than sell. It has nothing to do with the “Dogecoin Millionaire” trading apps advertised online, which follow a well-known scam pattern.
