Quick answer: buy Dogecoin in Germany the boring, sensible way
If you want to buy Dogecoin in Germany, you have more licensed choice than almost anyone else in Europe. ESMA’s interim MiCA register (file dated 7 October 2026) lists 103 crypto-asset service providers whose home regulator is BaFin, the largest number of any EU state. Add the providers from other EU countries that passport into Germany, and the shortlist for DOGE in euros is long: Bitpanda, BISON, Bitvavo, Kraken and Bitstamp all quoted DOGE against the euro when we checked on 14 October 2026.
The other half of the German story is tax. Under section 23 of the Income Tax Act, DOGE you hold for more than a year can be sold tax-free. That single rule shapes how many Germans buy: they pick a platform with clean records, note the purchase date, and wait. A ministry draft from 30 September 2026 would change this for coins bought from 2027, so read the reform section before you plan a long hold. For the country-neutral version of the process, see our step-by-step Dogecoin buying guide.
Price-wise, Bitpanda’s ticker showed DOGE at about €0.0731 on the evening of 14 October 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a quote; the widget at the top shows the live euro price, and the Dogecoin price page explains where those numbers come from.
Is Dogecoin legal in Germany? BaFin, MiCA and the KMAG
Yes. Dogecoin is legal to buy, hold and sell in Germany. What is regulated is the business of serving you. Before MiCA, German crypto custody and trading needed a licence under the Banking Act (KWG). Since 30 December 2024, the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation applies, and Germany implements it through the Kryptomärkteaufsichtsgesetz (KMAG). BaFin is the national competent authority.
Germany gave existing firms a 12-month transition window, according to ESMA’s list of grandfathering periods. That window closed around 30 December 2025. Since then, only MiCA-authorised providers, or banks and investment firms that notified BaFin, can legally serve German retail customers. The practical test is simple: find the platform’s legal entity in the ESMA register and check that Germany is covered.
Passporting matters more than the brand. Scalable Capital Bank, for example, is authorised by BaFin since 2 March 2026 but passported only within Germany, while N26 Bank’s authorisation covers seven countries. That tells you where a firm may operate, not which coins it lists, so DOGE availability still has to be checked coin by coin.
Where to buy DOGE in Germany: dogecoin kaufen, compared
Every platform below quoted DOGE in euros on 14 October 2026 and appears in the ESMA register. They differ in model. Bitpanda is a broker: you get a quoted price with its premium built in, between 0.00% and 2.49% according to its support pages. Bitvavo, Kraken and Bitstamp run order books, where you see the spread and pay a trading fee. BISON is Boerse Stuttgart’s app and lists Dogecoin on its coin page.
| Platform | DOGE market | Euro funding | MiCA authorisation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitpanda | DOGE/EUR (broker) | SEPA, PayPal, cards | FMA (AT), passported; BaFin for its asset-management arm |
| BISON | DOGE vs EUR (app) | SEPA | BaFin, 17 Jan 2025 (Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody) |
| Bitvavo | DOGE-EUR order book | SEPA, cards (1%) | AFM (NL), 26 Jun 2025, passported |
| Kraken | XDG/EUR | SEPA | Central Bank of Ireland, 25 Jun 2025 |
| Bitstamp | DOGE/EUR | SEPA | CSSF (LU), 15 May 2025 |
Bitpanda deserves a closer look because it is regulated twice over for German users: Bitpanda GmbH is authorised by Austria’s FMA and passported here, while Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH holds a BaFin authorisation from 24 January 2025. Our Bitpanda review goes through the broker premium in detail. If you prefer an order book and a published DOGE withdrawal fee (3.9 DOGE, checked via its API), read the Bitvavo review.
Some names come up a lot in German forums but could not be confirmed for DOGE. Trade Republic is BaFin-authorised and press reports list Dogecoin among its coins, yet its official asset list is app-only, so we could not verify it. N26 runs crypto through a Bitpanda white-label, and Scalable Capital was long limited to crypto ETPs; DOGE on either is unverified. Check inside the app before you fund an account.

Fetch some DOGEHow to buy Dogecoin in Germany, step by step
The German flow looks like the EU one, with two local habits: identity checks often use video or eID, and people save their trade confirmations from day one because the tax office cares about holding periods.
Pick an authorised platform
Search the legal entity in the ESMA register and confirm Germany is in its passport list. The table above is a starting point.
Verify your identity
Upload your ID or Reisepass and complete the platform’s KYC. Expect questions about your tax residence.
Deposit euros by SEPA
SEPA and SEPA Instant are free on most platforms. Cards and PayPal cost more; see the payments section below.
Buy DOGE
Use the instant-buy screen on a broker, or a limit order on an exchange to control the price you pay.
Record the date, then decide on custody
Save the confirmation. If you move DOGE to your own Dogecoin wallet, use the native DOGE network and an address starting with D.
One small trap: some exchanges also list wrapped DOGE on other chains. When you withdraw, the network must say Dogecoin, not BEP-20. Sending to the wrong network is a classic way to lose coins, and our Dogecoin scams guide covers the fake-support tricks that often follow such mistakes.
SEPA, PayPal and the end of giropay
SEPA and SEPA Instant are the default way to fund a crypto account in Germany. They are cheap or free, and an instant transfer usually lands in seconds. Card payments are quicker to set up but cost more: Bitvavo, for instance, charges 1% for card, Apple Pay and Google Pay deposits. For a cost breakdown by method, see buying Dogecoin with a card.
Searching for “dogecoin kaufen mit PayPal”? Bitpanda supports PayPal deposits in Germany, according to its support pages, at 1.49% on its Fusion platform. BISON does not. PayPal is handy if your money already sits there, but on a €100 purchase that fee alone is about €1.49 before any spread.
Dogecoin Steuer: the one-year rule and the €1,000 Freigrenze
Germany treats private sales of crypto as private disposal transactions under section 23(1) sentence 1 no. 2 EStG. Two rules decide almost everything for a DOGE holder.
First, the holding period. If more than one year passes between buying and selling, the gain is tax-free. Buy DOGE on 15 March and sell it on 16 March of the following year, and the profit is yours to keep, whatever its size. Sell earlier and the gain is added to your income and taxed at your personal income tax rate.
Second, the Freigrenze. Since tax year 2024, short-term gains from private disposals are tax-free if they total less than €1,000 in a calendar year. It is an exemption limit, not an allowance: at €1,000 or more, the entire gain becomes taxable, not just the part above the line. A trader with €990 of gains pays nothing; one with €1,010 pays tax on all €1,010.
Staking, lending and airdrops have their own guidance in the Finance Ministry’s letter of 6 March 2025, which also spells out what records you must keep. DOGE has no native staking, so any “DOGE earn” product is lending to the platform, with the tax and counterparty questions that come with it.
The proposed 2027 reform: what changes if it passes
On 30 September 2026 the Federal Ministry of Finance published a ministry draft (Referentenentwurf) to reform crypto taxation. It is proposed, not law. As drafted, it would move exchange-type crypto assets into section 20 EStG and tax gains at a flat 25% capital-income rate, the same regime as shares.
The detail that matters for DOGE buyers is timing. The draft applies to coins acquired after 31 December 2026. Holdings bought before then would keep the one-year rule. Platform withholding of the tax would start on 1 January 2028. If the draft passes unchanged, DOGE bought in the rest of this year would still qualify for tax-free sales after twelve months, while DOGE bought from 2027 would not. Drafts change in parliament, so treat this as a reason to keep good records, not as a deadline to rush.
CEX.IO in Germany: honest status
CEX.IO, a long-running exchange founded in 2013, is not an option for new German customers right now. The terms of its EU entity, CEX.IO EUROPE, S.L. in Madrid, last updated 1 July 2026, say it does not onboard new EU or EEA users. Existing accounts are limited to withdrawals and account management. The company says its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review, and it was not in ESMA’s register when we checked on 14 October 2026.
If you are an existing German CEX.IO user, you can still withdraw euro or DOGE balances. If you are new, use one of the authorised platforms above. We will update this page if the application is approved. Want the full picture on fees and alternatives? Our exchange reviews hub compares every venue we cover.
Local tips, ATMs and what to watch

Crypto ATMs exist but are not a DOGE route we can recommend. Kurant runs about 300 machine locations across Austria, Germany and Spain, with its German company based in Passau. Whether any German machine sells DOGE could not be confirmed, and ATM fees are usually far above app fees.
Keep a simple spreadsheet: date, amount of DOGE, euro price, fees, platform. It makes the one-year rule easy to prove and helps if the 2027 reform splits your holdings into old and new. When the time comes to cash out, our guide on how to sell Dogecoin covers withdrawals to a German bank account. Much paperwork, very worth it.
Neighbours do things differently. Austria taxes DOGE gains at a flat 27.5% and lets local platforms withhold it, as our Dogecoin in Austria guide explains, while Spain’s DOGE page covers a tiered savings tax. For all 17 markets, see the countries overview. None of this is tax advice; for larger sums, a Steuerberater is money well spent.
Questions people ask
Is it legal to buy Dogecoin in Germany?+
Yes. Buying, holding and selling DOGE is legal. Platforms that serve German customers need a MiCA authorisation from BaFin or another EU regulator, and since the 12-month transition ended around 30 December 2025, only authorised providers may serve retail clients.
Do I pay tax on Dogecoin in Germany?+
Gains from DOGE you sell within one year of buying it are private disposals under section 23 EStG and are taxed at your personal income tax rate. Sell after more than one year and the gain is tax-free. Total short-term gains under 1,000 euros a year are also tax-free, but at 1,000 euros or more the whole amount is taxable.
Will the one-year tax-free rule end?+
A Finance Ministry draft dated 30 September 2026 proposes a flat 25% tax on crypto acquired after 31 December 2026. It is only a draft. DOGE bought before that date would keep the one-year rule if the proposal passes as written.
Can I buy Dogecoin with PayPal in Germany?+
Bitpanda supports PayPal deposits in Germany, according to its support pages, and charges 1.49% for them on its Fusion platform. Bison does not offer PayPal. SEPA transfers are the cheaper default on most platforms.
Can I still use giropay to buy crypto?+
No. Most payment providers dropped giropay on 30 June 2024 and the scheme closed for good on 31 December 2024. Some old app-store listings still mention it, so ignore those and use SEPA or SEPA Instant instead.
Can Germans open a new CEX.IO account?+
No. CEX.IO stopped onboarding new EU and EEA users while its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review. Existing accounts can only withdraw funds and manage the account.
