Quick answer
To buy Dogecoin in the Netherlands, open an account with an AFM-authorised platform such as Bitvavo or Finst, deposit euros with iDEAL (now becoming iDEAL | Wero), and buy DOGE against the euro. Both platforms hold MiCA licences issued in Amsterdam. Kraken, Coinbase and Bitpanda also serve Dutch customers with licences from other EU countries. For taxes, DOGE goes into Box 3: you don’t pay tax on gains when you sell, you pay tax on a deemed return on what you own each 1 January.
On 14 October 2026 CoinGecko quoted DOGE at about €0.0731, and Bitvavo’s DOGE-EUR book was the largest euro market for DOGE that CoinGecko tracked that day, with about $1.56 million in 24-hour volume. The live box above shows today’s euro price. This guide covers the Dutch rules, the platforms, iDEAL, a worked Box 3 example and a few quirks you won’t find elsewhere. If you just want the generic walkthrough, start with how to buy Dogecoin.
AFM, DNB and MiCA
Dogecoin is legal in the Netherlands, and the Dutch moved faster than almost anyone to bring crypto firms under MiCA. Before the EU regulation, crypto firms registered with De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) under the Dutch anti-money-laundering act, the Wwft. That registration checked AML compliance. It was not a licence to run an exchange.
Under MiCA, the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) is the authority that grants crypto-asset service provider (CASP) licences. The Netherlands chose the shortest transition in our set. Firms that were registered before MiCA had only six months of grace, and that period ended on 30 June 2025, a full year before Italy, France and Poland closed theirs. Since then, any platform serving Dutch residents needs a MiCA licence from the AFM or from another EU regulator that it passports into the Netherlands.
The result is a crowded field. ESMA’s interim register, dated 7 October 2026, lists 29 CASPs with the Netherlands as their home state, third behind Germany (103) and France (36). Bitvavo was authorised on 26 June 2025, Finst on 24 July 2025, BLOX on 30 September 2025 and Coinmerce on 5 November 2025. A Dutch licence is not a guarantee against losses, but it does mean capital, custody and conduct rules apply, and that the AFM can act if something goes wrong.
Where Dutch DOGE buyers trade
We checked each platform’s DOGE market through its public API or official page on 14 October 2026. The licence column shows which regulator authorised the entity in ESMA’s register.
| Platform | DOGE market | Euro funding | MiCA licence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitvavo | DOGE-EUR, DOGE-USDC | iDEAL | Wero, SEPA free; card 1% | AFM, 26 Jun 2025 |
| Finst | DOGE in EUR and USDC, 0.15% fee | iDEAL | Wero, Bancontact, SEPA | AFM, no. 41000015 |
| Bitpanda | DOGE quoted in EUR (broker) | SEPA free; PayPal 1.49% | FMA (AT), passported |
| Coinbase | DOGE-EUR | Fee shown at checkout | CSSF (LU), passported |
| Kraken | XDG/EUR | Not checked by us | CBI (IE), passported |
| BLOX | DOGE not confirmed | n/a | AFM, 30 Sep 2025 |
Bitvavo, founded in Amsterdam in 2018, is the default for most Dutch DOGE buyers, and the numbers show why. Entry-level trading fees are 0.15% maker and 0.25% taker, the minimum order is €5 (about 68 DOGE on the day we checked), and a DOGE withdrawal costs 3.9 DOGE with a 14 DOGE minimum. It publishes quarterly proof-of-reserves attestations and offers an account guarantee for unauthorised access up to €100,000, subject to conditions. Our Bitvavo review also covers its past data incidents and its 2023 exposure to Gemini and DCG.
Finst is the newer Dutch option. Its Dogecoin page shows DOGE in euros and USDC with a 0.15% fee, and lists iDEAL-Wero, Bancontact and SEPA for deposits. The page gives AFM licence number 41000015. BLOX is also AFM-authorised, but we could not confirm a DOGE listing. Coinmerce is in the register too; we did not check its DOGE offer.
Among the passported players, Bitpanda is a broker with a 0% to 2.49% premium built into the price. Coinbase runs a DOGE-EUR market and offers two withdrawal networks, so pick the Dogecoin network for a normal DOGE wallet. Kraken lists Dogecoin under the older ticker XDG; it is the same coin.

Buy Dogecoin with iDEAL | Wero
iDEAL is how the Netherlands pays online, and it is the cheapest way to fund a Dutch crypto account. You choose iDEAL on the deposit screen, approve the payment in your banking app, and the euros usually arrive within moments. During 2026 and 2027, iDEAL is migrating to Wero, the European payment wallet, so you will increasingly see the label iDEAL | Wero. For you, the flow stays roughly the same.
At Bitvavo, iDEAL/Wero, SEPA, Bancontact and EPS deposits are free, while cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay cost 1%. Euro withdrawals back to your bank are free. On a €250 buy, paying by card costs you €2.50 more than iDEAL, which is enough DOGE to be annoying. Card routes in other countries are compared in our guide to buying Dogecoin with a card.
- The platform’s legal entity is in the ESMA register and the Netherlands is in its host list
- You fund with iDEAL | Wero or SEPA, not a card, unless speed matters more than 1%
- You compare the DOGE you receive, not the headline price, on any quick-buy screen
- You withdraw on the Dogecoin network to an address starting with D
- You note the euro value of your DOGE on 1 January for your Box 3 return
If you plan to keep your DOGE off the exchange, our Dogecoin wallet guide covers self-custody and the BEP-20 “DOGE” tokens you should not confuse with the real coin.
Dogecoin tax in the Netherlands: Box 3
This is the Dutch twist. The Netherlands does not tax your actual DOGE gains. Crypto is a Box 3 asset, and Box 3 is a tax on a deemed return on your net wealth, measured on 1 January. If DOGE doubles in March and you sell in November, the sale itself triggers no tax. What counts is what you held at the start of the year.
The Belastingdienst figures for 2026 are a tax-free allowance (heffingsvrij vermogen) of €59,357, or €118,714 with a fiscal partner, a fixed deemed return of 6.00% on “overige bezittingen”, the category that includes crypto, and a rate of 36%. Some coverage still quotes the Belastingplan 2026 proposal figures of 7.78% and €51,396. Those are not the figures the Belastingdienst publishes for 2026, so we don’t use them.
| Simplified Box 3 example, 2026 | Amount |
|---|---|
| DOGE value on 1 January 2026 | €80,000 |
| Minus tax-free allowance | − €59,357 |
| Amount above the allowance | €20,643 |
| Deemed return at 6.00% | €1,238.58 |
| Box 3 tax at 36% | €445.89 |
In other words, holding €80,000 of DOGE on 1 January 2026 and nothing else in Box 3 would cost about €446 in tax for the year, whatever DOGE did afterwards. Hold €50,000 and you stay under the allowance and owe nothing. A real return mixes savings, investments and debts, so use the Belastingdienst’s own calculation for your figures.
Two refinements matter. First, the actual-return system the government planned has been postponed, but taxpayers can already use the tegenbewijs (counter-evidence) route if their real return was lower than the deemed one. In a bad year for DOGE, that can cut your bill. Second, from 1 January 2026 crypto providers report customer data to tax authorities under the EU’s DAC8 rules, so assume the Belastingdienst can see your exchange balances.
CEX.IO in the Netherlands
CEX.IO, a global exchange running since 2013, lists DOGE against USD, EUR, BTC and USDC, but it is closed to new Dutch customers. Its European entity, CEX.IO Europe S.L. in Madrid, updated its terms on 1 July 2026 to say it does not onboard new EU or EEA users, and that existing accounts remain open for withdrawals and account management only. Its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review, and it is not in ESMA’s register dated 7 October 2026. It also has no iDEAL route for DOGE.
If you hold DOGE there, withdraw it to your own wallet or to an AFM-authorised platform on the Dogecoin network, and test with a small amount first. The site’s buttons point to CEX.IO because it serves many non-EU countries; if you are in the Netherlands, check availability before you try to sign up.

Comparing from outside the EU?CEX.IO sells DOGE in many non-EU markets but is not taking new EU users while its MiCA licence is pending. Check availability in your country first.
Fetch some DOGEDutch quirks worth knowing
The deepest euro DOGE market is Dutch. Bitvavo’s DOGE-EUR book was the largest euro DOGE market on CoinGecko on 14 October 2026, ahead of Kraken’s XDG/EUR at about $0.9 million. Deep books mean tighter spreads, which matters more for a low-priced coin like DOGE than people expect.
MiCA came early. Because the Dutch transition ended on 30 June 2025, local platforms have had more than a year under full supervision. Dutch users were among the first in the EU to see unlicensed apps switch off.
No crypto ATM data. We could not verify how many crypto ATMs operate in the Netherlands or whether any sell DOGE, so we don’t list any. The Netherlands is also not in the top 20 of Chainalysis’s 2025 adoption index.
Scams follow the money. Impersonating a well-known exchange, with a fake support call or a cloned app, is a classic trick in any market with one dominant local brand. A real exchange will never ask for your password or seed phrase. Our Dogecoin scams guide lists the usual tricks. When you want euros back, see how to sell Dogecoin.
Our take
The Netherlands is one of the easiest places in Europe to buy DOGE. You get a deep euro order book, free iDEAL deposits and two AFM-licensed local platforms. Box 3 is the trade-off: frequent traders pay nothing extra for activity, while long-term holders above the allowance pay every year whether DOGE rose or fell. Know your 1 January value, use the tegenbewijs if DOGE had a rough year, and keep your coins on the Dogecoin network.

Questions people ask
Is Dogecoin legal in the Netherlands?+
Yes. DOGE is legal to buy, hold and sell. Since 30 June 2025 only crypto firms authorised under MiCA, by the AFM or another EU regulator, may serve Dutch customers.
How do I buy Dogecoin with iDEAL?+
Open an account at a MiCA-authorised platform such as Bitvavo or Finst, choose iDEAL | Wero as the deposit method, approve the payment in your banking app and then buy DOGE with the euros. At Bitvavo iDEAL deposits are free; cards cost 1%.
How is Dogecoin taxed in the Netherlands?+
DOGE is a Box 3 asset. For 2026 the Belastingdienst applies a fixed 6% deemed return to crypto and other assets above the €59,357 tax-free allowance (€118,714 for fiscal partners) and taxes that at 36%. Actual gains are not taxed separately.
Do I pay tax when I sell DOGE at a profit in the Netherlands?+
Not on the sale itself. Box 3 looks at what you own on 1 January, not at your trades during the year. If your real return was lower than the deemed 6%, you may be able to use the tegenbewijs (counter-evidence) procedure.
Which Dutch exchanges are licensed for Dogecoin?+
Bitvavo (AFM, 26 June 2025) and Finst (AFM) both list DOGE in euros. Kraken, Coinbase and Bitpanda also serve Dutch users through MiCA licences from Ireland, Luxembourg and Austria.
Can I open a CEX.IO account in the Netherlands?+
No. CEX.IO’s EU terms of 1 July 2026 say it does not onboard new EU or EEA users, and existing accounts are withdrawal-only while its MiCA application with Spain’s CNMV is under review.
