Quick answer

The Elon Musk Dogecoin story is the most famous celebrity-and-coin relationship in crypto. Musk did not create Dogecoin, does not control it and has never said how much he owns. What he has done, mostly between 2019 and 2024, is tweet about it, joke about it, host Saturday Night Live as "The Dogefather", let Tesla take it for merchandise and put the Doge Shiba Inu on Twitter's homepage. Each of those moments moved the price, sometimes by 20–30% in a day.

The relationship has cooled since. Musk left the US government's D.O.G.E. unit in May 2025, and when X Money launched nationally in July 2026 it was fiat only, with no Dogecoin. This page walks through the full timeline, the measured price impact of each event and what all of it means for anyone holding DOGE today.

Why does Elon Musk like Dogecoin?

Musk has never written a manifesto about it. His public reasons have come in tweet-sized pieces: Dogecoin "might be my fav cryptocurrency. It's pretty cool" (April 2019), "Dogecoin is the people's crypto" (February 2021), and the line that Tesla would accept it for merch "& see how it goes" (December 2021). The tone is mostly playful, which fits a coin that started as a joke about crypto speculation.

Beyond the jokes, there are a few documented links. In August 2021, when the Dogecoin Foundation relaunched, Jared Birchall, representing Musk, was announced as an adviser alongside Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The Foundation's site no longer lists advisers, so we would not assume either role is current. Anything more about Musk's motives, from "he wants a payments coin for X" to "he likes the dog", is speculation.

To be clear on origins: Dogecoin was launched on 6 December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, using a photo of Kabosu, the Shiba Inu owned by Atsuko Sato. Our guide to what Dogecoin is covers how the network works without any billionaire involved, and the Dogecoin history page tells the full story from 2013.

Elon Musk Dogecoin tweets and their price impact

Did Musk's tweets really move DOGE? The short answer is yes, at least in the short run, and the effect has been reported often enough to have a nickname. The table collects the moves that reputable outlets actually measured. Time windows differ from one report to the next, so compare them loosely.

5–12 Nov 2024Election, then D.O.G.E. role≈$0.17 → $0.436 intradayCoinMarketCap data

Two patterns stand out. First, the pump before the event: the "Dogefather" tweet and the run-up to SNL pushed DOGE to its all-time high of about $0.7316 on 7 May 2021 (CoinGecko). Second, the sell-the-news drop: on the night itself DOGE fell up to 29.5%, and by CoinMarketCap's daily closes it slid from $0.636 on 8 May to $0.450 on 10 May. Anyone who bought the hype late lost a third of their money in two days.

The effect also faded with time. The March 2022 "still own and won't sell" tweet was worth about 7%. The Twitter logo stunt in April 2023 still produced a 30% intraday spike, and DOGE closed the day about 21% higher by CoinMarketCap data. The D.O.G.E. rally in November 2024 was bigger, yet it started in the week of the US election, so not all of it can be pinned on Musk. Over the past year DOGE has tracked Bitcoin closely, with a 0.80 daily-return correlation to 13 October 2026, which suggests the macro market now matters more than any single tweet. Our live Dogecoin price page shows where things stand now.

Does Elon Musk own Dogecoin? How much?

He says he does. On 14 March 2022 Musk tweeted "I still own & won't sell my Bitcoin, Ethereum or Doge fwiw", as Fortune reported. He has never disclosed an amount, and no filing we know of reveals one. So when an article tells you how much Dogecoin Elon Musk owns, it is guessing.

That uncertainty matters for one practical reason: you cannot tell whether he is buying or selling. No public blockchain address has been confirmed as his.

It also came up in court. In June 2022 a class action, Johnson v. Musk, sought $258 billion, accusing Musk and Tesla of running a Dogecoin "pyramid scheme". On 29 August 2024 US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein dismissed it with prejudice and described Musk's statements as "aspirational puffery", according to Reuters. The ruling did not say Musk's tweets were good advice; it said they were not fraud.

Tesla accepts Dogecoin? Merch, and the DOGE-1 mission

On 14 December 2021 Musk tweeted that Tesla would make some merchandise buyable with DOGE, and DOGE rose more than 20%, per CNBC. The shop went live on 14 January 2022, with items such as the Cyberwhistle (about 300 DOGE), the Giga Texas Belt Buckle (835 DOGE) and the Cyberquad for Kids (12,020 DOGE). Cars were never part of it. We could not verify whether the DOGE option is still available in October 2026, because Tesla's support page blocked our check. Our guide to who accepts Dogecoin keeps track of verified merchants and payment processors.

The other famous promise was DOGE-1. On 9 May 2021 SpaceX agreed to launch a small lunar satellite for Geometric Energy Corp., paid for in DOGE. It was meant to fly in early 2022, missed that ride and was rebooked. According to Wikipedia's DOGE-1 entry, it was tentatively scheduled for 13 September 2026, based on a single social-media post. We could not confirm that it launched, so treat DOGE-1 as repeatedly delayed and unconfirmed.

Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.) and X Money

In mid-November 2024, President-elect Trump named Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new "Department of Government Efficiency", abbreviated D.O.G.E. The acronym was an obvious wink at the coin, and the market took the hint: DOGE went from about $0.17 on election day (5 November) to an intraday high of about $0.436 on 12 November, by CoinMarketCap data. But the government unit had no official connection to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency. It was a name, not an adoption.

Musk said on 29 May 2025 that his time as a special government employee was ending. DOGE drifted from about $0.22 to $0.19 over the following days rather than crashing. In November 2025 Reuters quoted the head of the Office of Personnel Management saying D.O.G.E. "doesn't exist" as a central entity any more, months before its charter was due to run out.

Then there is X Money, long rumoured as the moment DOGE would become the currency of X. When it rolled out to all US X Premium subscribers on 27 July 2026, it was strictly fiat: deposits at a partner bank, a Visa debit card and peer-to-peer transfers, but no Dogecoin, no Bitcoin and no stablecoins, as TechTimes reported. We found no official announcement of DOGE integration as of 14 October 2026. Articles quoting precise odds of X Money adding DOGE tend to come from token-presale promoters; ignore them. Our Dogecoin price prediction treats X Money as a possible future driver, not a done deal.

Lessons for DOGE holders: don’t trade the tweets

Musk's influence on Dogecoin is real, and it is also the clearest argument against buying DOGE on headlines. Look at the pattern: the big spikes happened in minutes, mostly to people who were already holding, and many of the people who bought after the news paid peak prices. SNL is the textbook case.

A few practical habits follow from that history. Decide your position size before the next viral moment, not during it. If you invest regularly, a fixed schedule takes tweets out of the decision; the Dogecoin calculator lets you model that. Remember that DOGE issues about 5.256 billion new coins a year, so long-term price gains need lasting demand, not just a news cycle; the Dogecoin supply page explains the math. And weigh the bull and bear cases in our honest look at whether Dogecoin is a good investment.

Our take

Elon Musk made Dogecoin famous far beyond its meme roots, and his tweets moved the price more than once. But he is a fan, not a founder, his holdings are unknown, X Money does not use DOGE, and D.O.G.E. was never connected to the coin. Treat any Musk headline as volatility, not as a reason to buy.
