Dogecoin mining: what it really takes to earn DOGE

Dogecoin mining still pays 10,000 DOGE a block, but only Scrypt ASICs, cheap power and usually a Litecoin merged-mining pool make it add up. Here is the honest math.

Quick answer

Dogecoin mining is the process that secures the Dogecoin blockchain and creates every new coin. Miners race to solve a Scrypt proof-of-work puzzle, and whoever finds a valid block collects a fixed reward of 10,000 DOGE plus transaction fees. Blocks are targeted at one per minute, so the network issues roughly 14.4 million DOGE a day.

Can you join in? Yes, but the days of mining DOGE on a laptop ended long ago. In mid-October 2026 the network hashrate was about 2–2.4 PH/s, according to Blockchair and Dogechain.com. That is the equivalent of about 125,000 top-end mining machines, most of which mine Litecoin at the same time. To earn a real share you need a Scrypt ASIC, electricity at a low price per kWh, a pool, and a tolerance for noise and heat. If that sounds like more than you signed up for, you are in good company.

How Dogecoin mining works

Dogecoin is a proof-of-work coin. Its code descends from Luckycoin, which itself came from Litecoin, and it uses the same Scrypt hashing algorithm. Miners bundle pending transactions into a candidate block and then hash its header over and over, changing a small number each time, until the result falls below a target set by the network difficulty. The first valid answer wins, the block is broadcast, and everyone moves on to the next one.

The difficulty adjusts constantly (Dogecoin has used the DigiShield algorithm since block 145,000) so that blocks keep arriving roughly once a minute no matter how much hashing power joins or leaves. More miners do not mean more DOGE; they just mean each miner gets a smaller slice of the same 14.4 million coins a day. That single fact drives everything else on this page.

The reward schedule has not always been this tidy. In the first months of 2014 block rewards were random, anywhere from 1 to 1,000,000 DOGE. Then came fixed rewards that halved every 100,000 blocks, and from block 600,000 (mined on 25 February 2015) the reward has been a constant 10,000 DOGE. There is no cap, so this issuance continues indefinitely; our Dogecoin supply guide shows how that works out to about 5.256 billion new coins a year and a slowly falling inflation rate.

Miners also earn the fees attached to the transactions they include, but on Dogecoin those are tiny. The median fee was about $0.001 on 14 October 2026, so the block subsidy is almost the whole paycheck. You can read more about fees, block times and confirmations on our Dogecoin network page.

Dogecoin merged mining with Litecoin

Here is the twist that makes DOGE mining unusual. Since September 2014 (block 371,337, mined on 11 September), Dogecoin has supported auxiliary proof of work, better known as merged mining. Because Litecoin and Dogecoin both use Scrypt, a miner can do the work once and submit it to both chains. The same hashes that try to find a Litecoin block also count toward Dogecoin blocks, and the miner can be paid on both.

Before the switch, DOGE had a small and shrinking hashrate and was an easy target for attackers. Merged mining effectively lends Dogecoin the security of the much larger Litecoin mining industry. The official Dogecoin mining guide describes exactly this setup and notes that many pools pay out LTC and DOGE at the same time.

For you as a miner, it means three practical things. First, nearly every serious "Dogecoin miner" is really a Litecoin miner with DOGE as a bonus, or the other way round. Second, your revenue comes in two coins, so your profitability depends on two prices. Third, you will usually need payout addresses for both coins. If you are curious how Dogecoin's lineage and security model compare with the original proof-of-work coin, our Dogecoin vs Bitcoin comparison has a Litecoin section too.

Best Dogecoin miner hardware (Scrypt ASICs)

A Scrypt ASIC is a box built to do one thing: compute Scrypt hashes as efficiently as possible. The metric that matters most is not raw hashrate but efficiency, measured in joules per gigahash (J/GH). Lower is better, because your power bill is the cost that never goes away.

The table below lists the machines our research could find. Only the Antminer L9 figures come straight from the manufacturer; the rest come from retailer or pool listings and should be treated as approximate. We have not tested any of these units, and prices change too fast to quote, so check a current listing before buying.

ElphaPex DG Home 12.1 GH/s630 W≈300 J/GHPool listing only, ≈50 dB

The L9 is the reference point used by our calculator: 16 GH/s at 3,360 W at the wall, 75 dBA of fan noise, 14.2 kg and a 220–277 V supply, per Bitmain's L9 specification page. Bitmain lists LTC, DOGE and several smaller Scrypt coins as compatible. Smaller "home" units like the ElphaPex DG Home 1 trade raw power for lower noise, but at roughly 300 J/GH they are less efficient per coin mined.

Buy only from the manufacturer or a well-known reseller, and be very wary of "hosted" machines you never see. A rig that exists only on a dashboard is a classic setup for the cloud-mining fraud covered further down.

Can you mine Dogecoin on a PC, GPU or phone?

You can run Scrypt mining software on a PC, but you will not make money. The official Dogecoin site says plainly that mining with gaming GPUs yields "close to no profit" and that profitable mining generally requires Scrypt ASICs.

The numbers explain why. With the network at about 2 PH/s, which is 2,000,000 GH/s, a single 16 GH/s L9 controls roughly 0.0008% of the total. A high-end graphics card manages something in the region of a few megahashes per second on Scrypt, thousands of times less than one ASIC, and a CPU is lower still. Your share of the 14.4 million daily DOGE becomes a rounding error, while the card still pulls hundreds of watts.

Phones are a non-starter. Many apps advertised as "Dogecoin mining" do no real mining at all: they hand out points, show adverts or push referral schemes, and some are outright scams. If you want small amounts of DOGE without a rig, our guide to earning Dogecoin separates the legit options from the junk.

Dogecoin mining pools vs solo mining

A pool combines thousands of miners' hashrate, finds blocks far more often than any one member could, and shares the rewards in proportion to the work each member submits. You trade a small fee for a steady income instead of a lottery ticket.

How much of a lottery? Take that L9 again. With 0.0008% of a 2 PH/s network and 1,440 blocks a day, it would find a block on average once every 87 days or so. "On average" hides a lot: you could hit one next week or go half a year with nothing, all while paying for electricity. Solo merged mining also means running and maintaining full nodes for both Litecoin and Dogecoin. For almost everyone, a pool is the sensible choice.

ViaBTCPPS+ or PPLNSSee pool siteSays it is the largest LTC/DOGE pool (its own claim)
F2PoolPPLNS (per third-party directory)See pool sitePays DOGE alongside LTC; terms not checked on f2pool.com

PPS (pay per share) pays a fixed amount for each valid share you submit, so the pool carries the luck risk and usually charges more for it. PPLNS (pay per last N shares) pays based on blocks the pool actually finds, which tracks real luck more closely and tends to be cheaper. Dogecoin's own guide says pool fees are typically around 1%; LitecoinPool.org charges 2% PPS with free payouts. We could not verify any pool's share of the network: Blockchair labels recent blocks with an unknown miner, so treat market-share claims, including ViaBTC's own, as marketing.

Dogecoin mining profitability: the math

Every Dogecoin mining calculator, including the one at the top of this page, runs the same formula. Your expected daily DOGE is your share of the network hashrate multiplied by the daily issuance:

DOGE per day ≈ (your hashrate ÷ network hashrate) × 1,440 blocks × 10,000 DOGE × (1 − pool fee)

Then subtract your power cost (watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 hours × your price per kWh) and, if you are merged mining, add the Litecoin reward computed the same way with Litecoin's numbers (6.25 LTC per block, about 576 blocks a day). Divide the hardware price by daily profit and you get a rough payback period.

A worked example with dated inputs, DOGE side only:

  1. Your share

    16 GH/s ÷ 2,000,000 GH/s (network, Blockchair, 14 Oct 2026) = 0.0008%.

  2. Coins per day

    0.000008 × 14,400,000 DOGE ≈ 115 DOGE, or about 114 after a 1% pool fee.

  3. Value per day

At about $0.0815 (CoinGecko, 14 Oct 2026) that is roughly $9.30.

  4. Power per day

    3.36 kW × 24 h = 80.6 kWh. At $0.17 per kWh that costs about $13.70.

  5. Verdict

DOGE alone does not cover the bill at that power price; break-even is roughly $0.115 per kWh. The Litecoin reward is what decides profit or loss.

Three things move these numbers every day: the DOGE and LTC prices, the network hashrate (which tends to rise over time as new machines ship) and your electricity price. Our calculator pulls the live DOGE price when it can; it leaves out pool fees, downtime and the Litecoin reward, so treat its "net per day" as the DOGE-only view. For a full LTC plus DOGE figure, the official guide points to unaffiliated sites such as Minerstat. And if you want to see what your coins would be worth in your own currency, the Dogecoin calculator converts any amount.

Mining Dogecoin at home: noise, heat and power

People who buy their first ASIC are often surprised by everything except the hashrate. An L9 draws 3.36 kW continuously, roughly what two typical 1.5 kW space heaters put out, and turns nearly all of it into heat. Bitmain rates it at 75 dBA, which is loud enough that most people would not want it in a room they live in. It also expects a 220–277 V supply, so in countries with 120 V household circuits it needs dedicated wiring.

  • Check your electricity tariff and whether your landlord or local rules allow continuous high-power loads.
  • Use a dedicated circuit rated for the load; ask an electrician rather than guessing.
  • Plan where the hot air goes: a garage, basement or ventilated shed beats a bedroom.
  • Account for noise: fans run 24/7, and neighbours notice.
  • Set up payout addresses for both DOGE and LTC in wallets you control.
  • Keep records of every payout; in many countries mined coins are taxable income when received.

For the DOGE payouts, a self-custody wallet is the natural home; our Dogecoin wallet guide explains the options. When you eventually want to turn coins back into cash, the guide to selling Dogecoin walks through exchange withdrawals and fees, and the country guides cover local tax rules.

Cloud mining and "free mining" red flags

Wherever real mining is hard, fake mining shows up promising to make it easy. "Dogecoin cloud mining" sites usually offer a contract or a hosted machine with a fixed daily return. In April 2019 the SEC and CFTC issued a joint investor alert describing exactly this pattern: fraudsters claim to invest your money in mining farms, promise high guaranteed returns, then demand extra "taxes" or fees before any withdrawal, and finally go silent.

It is not a theoretical risk for DOGE holders. In August 2021 Decrypt reported allegations that a Dogecoin "mining" scheme in Turkey had taken about $119 million from roughly 1,500 people after promising 100% returns. Real mining income moves with price, difficulty and luck. Any plan that promises a fixed daily yield in DOGE is a red flag, not a business model.

Our Dogecoin scams guide covers cloud-mining schemes, fake apps and impersonators in more depth. If you simply want exposure to DOGE without hardware, the straightforward route is to buy Dogecoin on a regulated platform; our exchange reviews compare fees and licences by country. Mining is a fascinating corner of crypto and the reason the coin exists at all, but at home it is a hobby first and an investment a distant second.

Questions people ask

Can you still mine Dogecoin?+

Yes. Every new DOGE block pays 10,000 DOGE plus fees to whoever mines it, and that will not change because Dogecoin has no supply cap. What has changed is the competition: the network ran at roughly 2 to 2.4 PH/s in mid-October 2026, so you need a Scrypt ASIC to earn a meaningful share.

How long does it take to mine 1 Dogecoin?+

It depends entirely on your hashrate. A 16 GH/s Antminer L9 against a 2 PH/s network works out to roughly 115 DOGE a day before pool fees, so about 12–13 minutes per coin. A gaming GPU produces thousands of times less, which in practice means you never break even.

Can you mine Dogecoin on a PC or phone?+

Technically a PC can run Scrypt mining software, but dogecoin.com itself says gaming-GPU mining yields close to no profit. Phones are weaker still, and most “phone mining” apps do not mine anything at all; they are reward or referral apps, or worse.

What is the best Dogecoin miner?+

There is no single best one, only the most efficient for your power price. The Bitmain Antminer L9 (16 GH/s at 3,360 W per Bitmain) is the reference machine. Older or alternative units such as the Antminer L7 and ElphaPex DG1+ appear in retailer listings, but their specs are not confirmed by the makers.

Is Dogecoin mining profitable?+

Only if your electricity is cheap. Using mid-October 2026 numbers, an L9 earns about $9 a day in DOGE alone while burning about 81 kWh. At $0.17 per kWh that is roughly $13.70 of power, so the Litecoin side of merged mining has to cover the gap. Run your own numbers with the calculator on this page.

Do I need a Litecoin wallet to mine Dogecoin?+

If you use a merged-mining pool, usually yes: the pool pays the Litecoin reward in LTC and the Dogecoin reward in DOGE, so you set a payout address for each coin. Check your pool’s settings page for the exact rules.
