Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu: same dog, very different coins

Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu in one line: DOGE is a 2013 proof-of-work blockchain with no supply cap; SHIB is a 2020 Ethereum token that started with a quadrillion units. Here’s how that plays out for fees, supply, risk and wallets.

Our buttons open CEX.IO, an exchange running since 2013. In the US it is registered with NMLS (#1804170) and lists money-transmitter licences in 38 states plus DC; in the UK it is registered with the FCA for anti-money-laundering purposes (firm 1007192). Check that it serves your country first.

Quick answer: Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu

The Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu question comes up because both coins wear the same furry face. Under the fur they are built very differently. Dogecoin is a full blockchain of its own, launched on 6 December 2013 by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, secured by proof-of-work miners and issuing a fixed 10,000 new DOGE every block forever. Shiba Inu is a token that lives on Ethereum, launched in August 2020 by a pseudonymous creator called Ryoshi, with a giant fixed starting supply and no mining at all.

So, is Shiba Inu Dogecoin? No. They share a meme and a dog breed, not code, not developers and not a network. If you want the longer backstory of the original, our plain-English explainer on what Dogecoin is covers it, and the Dogecoin history timeline tells the Kabosu story properly.

On 14 October 2026, CoinGecko put DOGE at about $12.74 billion in market value (rank #12) and SHIB at about $2.97 billion (rank #38). That makes Dogecoin roughly four times bigger. The live widget above refreshes those numbers, because a static figure in an article goes stale before you finish your coffee.

Doge vs SHIB side by side

Here are the static facts, the ones that don’t change with the price. Read the first rows carefully: almost every practical difference between the two flows from the fact that one is a blockchain and the other is a token on someone else’s blockchain.

Two rows deserve a second look. The supply rule shapes long-term dilution, and the address format decides whether your coins arrive or vanish when you move them. We come back to both below.

Own chain vs Ethereum token

Dogecoin started as a fork of Luckycoin, which itself descended from Litecoin, and it uses the same Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm. Since September 2014 (block 371,337) it has been merge-mined with Litecoin, which means the same mining work can secure both chains at once. Blocks target one minute; over the last 100 blocks before 14 October 2026 they averaged about 62.6 seconds, according to dogechain.com. The guide to the Dogecoin network goes deeper on fees, confirmations and nodes.

Shiba Inu has none of that machinery. SHIB is an ERC-20 token, a line in a smart contract on Ethereum (contract address 0x95ad…c4ce, per CoinGecko). Its security is Ethereum’s security, and moving it on the main chain means paying Ethereum gas, in ETH, at whatever the network charges that day. To cut those costs, the SHIB community built Shibarium, a layer-2 network that uses a separate token, BONE, for gas. Press reports date its mainnet beta to mid-August 2023, but we could not confirm that date from a primary source, and usage figures conflict between trackers, so we don’t quote them.

For DOGE, fees are paid in DOGE itself and are tiny. Blockchair’s 24-hour median fee on 14 October 2026 was about $0.00095 per transaction. That’s one of the few places where “such fee, very small” is a literal description rather than a joke.

Supply, inflation and burns

This is the section where the two coins really part ways. Dogecoin has no maximum supply. The original plan was a 100 billion cap, but in February 2014 the developers dropped it, and since block 600,000 (25 February 2015) every block has paid exactly 10,000 DOGE. At the one-minute target that is about 5.256 billion new DOGE a year. Against roughly 156.3 billion coins in circulation on 14 October 2026, that works out to about 3.36% annual inflation, a rate that slowly falls every year because the absolute amount stays fixed while the base grows. Our Dogecoin supply page has the full maths and a 2030 projection.

Shiba Inu went the other way. It launched with one quadrillion tokens (a 1 followed by 15 zeros) and the contract creates no more. The circulating number has only gone down. The most famous drop came in May 2021, when Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who had been sent a huge pile of SHIB, burned about 410 trillion tokens, roughly 90% of his holding and worth around $6.7 billion on paper at the time. Community burn trackers (Shibburn data, reported March 2026) put cumulative burns at about 410.75 trillion, which tells you most of the shrinkage came from that one event. CoinGecko showed about 589.24 trillion SHIB circulating on 14 October 2026.

Which model is “better”? Neither is magic. DOGE’s steady issuance is a predictable cost holders pay to keep miners paid. SHIB’s huge supply means each unit is priced in fractions of a cent, which feels cheap but isn’t: a low unit price says nothing about value. Burns help only if they’re large relative to the total, and on SHIB they have been small since 2021.

Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu market cap and drawdowns

Market cap is price times circulating supply, so it lets you compare a $0.08 coin with a $0.000005 one fairly. Here is the dated snapshot from CoinGecko.

All-time high$0.7316 (7 May 2021)$0.00008616 (27 Oct 2021)
Below ATH≈ −88.9%≈ −94.2%

Both coins sit far below their 2021 peaks. DOGE is roughly 89% under its CoinGecko all-time high of $0.7316 from 7 May 2021, and SHIB is roughly 94% under its own peak from 27 October 2021. Those numbers are a sober reminder that meme-coin manias end, and that the wait for a recovery can be long. The live Dogecoin price page shows where DOGE trades right now.

Volatility is high for both. Our calculation from CoinMarketCap daily data puts DOGE’s annualised volatility at about 66.8% for the year to 13 October 2026, against 44.3% for Bitcoin. We did not run the same calculation for SHIB, so we won’t pretend to a number, but small-cap tokens rarely move less than the bigger meme coin.

Here’s a piece of arithmetic that cuts through a lot of social-media noise. With about 589.24 trillion SHIB in circulation, one cent per token would imply a market cap of roughly $5.9 trillion. For DOGE, one dollar would mean about $156 billion, which is about 12 times the 14 October value. Neither is a forecast; they’re just multiplication. What people actually do with them

Dogecoin’s use cases are simple: tipping (it was born as an internet tipping coin), cheap payments where a merchant accepts it, and plenty of speculation. It also has a growing wrapper of traditional finance. In the US you can get exposure through several listed products, including REX-Osprey’s DOJE (launched 18 September 2025), Grayscale’s GDOG and 21Shares’ TDOG, although they are small and Bitwise’s BWOW has its last trading day on 14 October 2026. Since 2023 people have also inscribed NFTs and DRC-20 tokens on Dogecoin (“Doginals”), but there are no native smart contracts.

Shiba Inu’s pitch is the Ethereum toolbox: it can be used in DeFi apps, swapped on decentralised exchanges and bridged to Shibarium, where the community runs its own apps. That flexibility comes with Ethereum-style complexity, from gas fees to token approvals. In practice, for most holders of either coin, the main activity is buying on an exchange and waiting.

If you just want to own DOGE in the simplest way, an exchange account plus a wallet you control is enough. Our step-by-step guide to buying Dogecoin walks through it, and the independent exchange reviews compare fees and licences.

Shiba Inu or Dogecoin: which is better?

There’s no universal winner, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What we can do is match each coin to the kind of person who tends to prefer it.

DOGE tends to suit people who want the longest track record in meme coins (since 2013), a network that doesn’t depend on another chain, very cheap native transfers and the option of regulated wrappers like ETFs. The trade-off is permanent inflation of a few percent a year and no supply cap.

SHIB tends to suit people who already live in the Ethereum world, use self-custody wallets and DeFi, and like the idea of a fixed supply with occasional burns. The trade-offs are a smaller market, extra layers (Ethereum gas, Shibarium, BONE) and an even deeper drawdown from its peak.

Our take

Dogecoin is the simpler, larger and older asset; Shiba Inu is the more complex, smaller and more Ethereum-dependent one. Neither produces income, both swing wildly, and both have spent years well below their 2021 highs. If you hold either, treat it as a high-risk slice of a portfolio, not a plan. For the broader case for and against, read is Dogecoin a good investment.

Comparing DOGE to the coin it was originally a parody of is a different exercise altogether. Our Dogecoin vs Bitcoin guide covers supply caps, security and how closely the two prices move together.

Mistakes that cost real money

Most losses with these two coins don’t come from price swings. They come from mixing up networks and from scammers who rely on the shared branding.

  • Never send SHIB to a DOGE address, or DOGE to a 0x address. Native DOGE addresses start with D, A or 9.
  • When withdrawing DOGE from an exchange, choose the Dogecoin network, not a wrapped version on BNB Chain or Base, unless you know exactly why.
  • Ignore “Dogecoin 2.0”, “Baby Doge” or any “new Shiba” token that borrows the names; they are separate projects.
  • No real giveaway asks you to send coins first. Fake Elon Musk giveaways are the classic DOGE scam.
  • Check that your wallet app is the genuine one before typing a seed phrase anywhere.

Questions people ask

Is Shiba Inu the same as Dogecoin?+

No. Both use a Shiba Inu dog as their mascot, but Dogecoin (DOGE) is its own proof-of-work blockchain launched on 6 December 2013, while Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum launched in August 2020 by the pseudonymous Ryoshi. They share a meme, not code.

What is the difference between Dogecoin and Shiba Inu?+

DOGE runs on its own Scrypt proof-of-work chain, has no supply cap and adds 10,000 coins per block. SHIB is a token on Ethereum with a fixed starting supply of one quadrillion and no new issuance, and its supply has shrunk through burns. DOGE was also about four times larger by market cap on 14 October 2026 (CoinGecko).

Should I buy Dogecoin or Shiba Inu?+

We can’t tell you what to buy, and neither coin has cash flows to value. Compare them on what you care about: DOGE has a longer track record, its own network, cheap native transfers and US-listed ETFs; SHIB lives in the Ethereum ecosystem and has a layer-2 called Shibarium. Both are highly volatile meme assets, so size any position as money you can afford to lose.

Which has the bigger market cap, DOGE or SHIB?+

On 14 October 2026 CoinGecko listed Dogecoin at about $12.74 billion (rank #12) and Shiba Inu at about $2.97 billion (rank #38). Market caps change every minute, so check the live comparison at the top of this page.

Can Shiba Inu reach one cent?+

It is a matter of arithmetic, not prophecy. With about 589.24 trillion SHIB in circulation (14 October 2026), a price of $0.01 would mean a market cap of roughly $5.9 trillion, far more than the whole crypto market has ever been worth. Burns reduce the supply only slowly.

Can I send SHIB to my Dogecoin wallet?+

No. SHIB lives on Ethereum and uses 0x addresses; native DOGE addresses start with D (or A or 9 for script addresses). Sending a token to an address on the wrong network can lose it for good, so always check the network field before you confirm a withdrawal.
